After class, Barry went back to his room to some work for his career guidance class on Friday but had difficulty concentrating. The whole nature vs. nurture conversation was nagging at him and... okay, while his parents weren't the best in the world maybe they deserved to be treated a little better by their asshole of a son.

So he picked up the phone and dialed home.

"Hello?"

"Hi, Mom," Barry said hesitantly. "It's Barry."

"Barry! What's wrong? You just called yesterday. Did something happen?" his mom asked.

"God damn it!" Barry's dad yelled. "What the hell happened? Did you get kicked out already?"

"No," Barry groaned. "It's just that for a long time I've been keeping a secret from you and I thought it would be a good time to come clean."

"Oh, no," his Mom said softly. "Are you coming out dear?"

"What? No!"

"God damn it," his father shouted. "I always knew he was fooling around with that Mexican kid."

"He's Puerto Rican and I'm not gay!" Barry shouted back. "The truth is I've been a genius since I was born and have been doing scientific experiments since I was eight months old."

"Bullshit," his dad replied. "If that's the case why are your grades so low?"

"Now dear, he's just trying to reach out to us. If he'd been a genius we'd have known about it."

Barry shook his head and brought up the remote access controls for his home lab. "Never mind," Barry replied. "Hey, you guys are in the living room, right?"

"Yes. What about... What the hell is that?!"

"It's a memory inhibitor that I have hidden behind the fake Picasso you have over the fireplace," Barry explained. "Just look at the blinking light."

"BARRY WEEN YOU PUT THAT DAMN DOO-HICKEY-"

His father's tirade ended when the memory inhibitor fired wiping out the last five minutes of their memory. Barry could hear the "FWASH" over the phone line. He let out a sigh.

"Hi Mom! Hi Dad! I forgot to mention yesterday that I sent Mom a gift but it will be there a little late."

"That's all right dear. You have a good time at your new school and work hard, okay?"

"Sure thing, Mom," Barry replied and ended the call with the standard "goodbyes" and "I love you too's".

He let out a long sigh as he hung up the phone. "I don't know why I bothered."
