Barry was blissfully unaware of any weirdness going on in his life and gave the radio a little glare when it announced that he was acting weird.

"What the fuck-"

Nanananananananananana

"-is weird with eating cereal and watching TV in a common room?"

Yep. Totally normal there Barry.

The doors to the warehouse were open and anybody coming in would no doubt find Barry working on a shell of a submarine, swearing and making weird noises.

So, Barry was apparently acting weird, and Rapunzel was bored because it was break.

You see how those two things would lead to her wandering down to the warehouse to check on him, of course.

"What're you working on?" she chirped in greeting. He didn't look weird. At least, not weirder than usual.

"Lots of things," Barry said looking up briefly from where some of the welding was going on. "Right now I'm making a submarine for a friend."

He vaulted down from the shell easily enough. "Also been working on something for you. Still in the prototype stage though. What have you been up to?"

"For me?" Rapunzel actually tore her attention away from the submarine, because of course she'd never seen anything like that. "Um, I've been...you know. Working on my mural and reading and poking at the computers in the library and knitting and playing with Pascal, and...you know. Just doing my normal stuff."

She carefully stepped a little closer to the sub, standing on tip-toe with her hands behind her back as she peered at it. "What does this thing do?"

Ah. Right. When they first met Rapunzel had never seen an airplane before so a sub would be new to her too.

"It's kind of like an enclosed boat," Barry tried to explained. "Except instead of being on top of the fucking-"

Meep

The "meep" was quick, quiet and came out of Barry's mouth but he continued as if he hadn't noticed.

"-of the water, it sails underneath the surface of the water. There's a lot to it. You need to provide enough shielding to make sure the walls don't buckle under the pressure. Air scrubbers so you can convert carbon dioxide back to oxygen. This will have a medical area, a small conference room and I'm thinking of adding a game console."

"Did you just 'meep'?"

Rapunzel was, of course, very engrossed in the explanation, but that was a little hard to miss, still.

Barry blinked and gave Rapunzel a confused look.

"No," he said shaking his head and then shrugged. "Probably one of the computer systems around here. Anyway, I wanted to show you something I'm still testing."

He went over to a locked cabinet and after using his palm removed a container that appeared to contain a baseball cap.

"Check this out. If you ever want to not run around with your hair all loose?"

Barry took his hand and put it into the hat. And then his forearm, elbow and upper arm disappeared into the hat with it going up to his shoulder.

"Now you don't have to do it with all that fucking-"

beep

"-hair dragging all over the place."

"You just did it again," Rapunzel noted, but she was more intrigued by the hat at the moment, anyway. Maybe this was just a new thing Barry was trying out?

She eagerly padded over to look at the hat, peering into it. "Okay, wait, where's your hand going? Is that -- I mean, it's not magic, right? I know you're sciencey and I get that but...."

But the idea of being able to run around without worrying about her hair dragging everywhere was incredibly tempting, even if she was wary of tossing it all into another dimension, instead.

"It's going into a null void dimension," Barry said pulling his arm out the hat and... well not paying attention to the noise thing. What noise thing? "It has an atmosphere and everything but there's just nothing there. The hat has a small portal opening where I can slip my arm or leg through but not much else. I'm also thinking of finding a dimension that's also a void but has a slight higher temperature with conditioning properties so you can dry your hair easily."

"And there's no risk of...like, my hair just getting lost in another dimension?"

The things this island made you say, sometimes.

"Nope," Barry said turning a bit. "I wouldn't be putting fucking-"

doop

"-putting my arm in the hat if it was. Rest assured though, I'm handing this off to you until I've tested every single possible issue. Plus the color is wrong."

"I think it's when you're swearing," Rapunzel said thoughtfully, getting a little more concerned. "It's hard to tell, though."

Because of the sheer frequency of swearing, yes.

"But -- Barry, this hat is amazing. I could go to the mainland!" She'd been too afraid to even consider it, up to now.

"That's the general idea," Barry said cheerfully and... well ignoring the swearing thing. He swore all the time. Rapunzel must be hearing his equipment. "Once I'm finished testing. And for colors I was thinking pink with a little chameleon logo on it for Pascal."

"He will love that," Rapunzel said emphatically, reaching out for the hat. "Can I try it?"

Look, if he was going to ignore the booping and beeping and whatever, she wasn't going to fret that hard, just yet. (She'd likely work herself into a fit of worry before long, though.)

"Sure," Barry said handing the hat over. "Tell me how it feels."
