After work, Barry had spent most of his time cleaning up the warehouse and establishing a portal back to his world. The portal actually only took a minute and the cleaning was actually pretty needless but nevertheless, Barry was in high gear in preparation for tonight.

Not that he was nervous or anything.

Nope. Not at all. Not one bit.

[For that one.]

Well, way to go and swing the door to doubt wide open now, Barry. Because now Summer was eyeing him a bit skeptically as the possibilities of stuff she might not enjoy came marching to the forefront.

Especially when they both had a pretty hefty track record of things going...wrong.

Maybe she should have brought her blaster. Maybe he should have stick with more guns over flowers, maybe--

Nope. Whatever it was, she could deal, she could adapt, she could improvise. How bad could it be, anyway?

(Ugh, never ask that, Summer, you know the answer to that was usually way worse than you're thinking).

But there was only one way to know.

"Bitch," she said, overcompensatinf with a confident grin as she moved forward and would not hesitate to push Barry through with her if she had to, "I was born ready."

Not even remotely true, but it sounded cool!

Yeah, as far as all the things on Summer's whole ass list of possibilities, this wasn't even remotely on it.

"Whaaaat," she started, because now there was a chef's jacket in her hand and a flurry of activity, "the hell..."

Then those bug, wide eyes, reluctant to stop taking it all in, turned toward Barry.

"Are you serious right now?"

That last part was really testing Summer's ability to just stare at Barry through all of that with as straight a face as possible, although, really, the fact that this was probably the most effort anyone had ever put into anything for her was kind of even more mind blowing than even the concept.

So she didn't.fight the grin, because that was a battle she would lose anyway right now, but she still couldn't quite let bask in his own brilliance yet.

"Soooo," she said, "your big idea for a date involves me busting my ass in a kitchen for some interdimensional street cred while you, what, just sit back and enjoy the show?"

Okay, maybe now Summer felt a little bad, because that was maybe unfair, he still didn't really know her or her sense of humor that well yet, but even that response was kind of adorable and perfect and she should pit the poor guy out of his misery already.

"Don't you fucking dare," she said. "This is amazing."

She started pulling on the chef's jacket to prove it. "I am going to kick so much ass out there. "

"Ohmygod," said Summer, once everything was suddenly getting started and the montages were running, "this is so stupid, I love it."

But there was definitely going to be some major side-eyeing at Barry once it got to hers. Impressed and amused as hell, sure, but still! Soooo much well-deserved side-eye, there.

And then it was her turn to enter the kitchen arena, but there was something very sudden and important she needed to do first, and that was to sweep in and hit Barry with a swift kiss on the cheek.

"Wish me luck!" she said, but she turned to hurry toward the hallway before he could really say much of anything. She managed to temper her excited bounce into a more confident strut, but she was having a much more difficult time keeping the dumb grin off her face.

Right. So. Summer had to take a moment to sort of get over the sheer absurdity of any of this, because it was really, really actually happening and she it was going to be super embarrassing to biff this. She took a breath, put on her game face, focused in on the basket, and thought for a second.

Got it. Okay. It was brilliant, actually, if she said so herself, but it was a risk to pull this out at the beginning. Still, if she flopped this, she wouldn't get a second chance, and this was sure to guarantee her a spot in the next round.

She wouldn't even to use the jello setter, not for this one, but she was going to need to pop a cup of oil into the blast chiller to get it cold as quickly as possible. She'd be cutting it close with time but it would be worth it, and Dr. Lecter would probably lose his shit with pride right now.

Cut up the Slim Jims, start rehydrating it with that bourbon.

The bacon wouldn't take long, she needed it good and soft, and use some more of the bourbon for a sort of glaze.

Get the jello started. Add some fucking balsamic...

And she needed to find some kind of dropper...aha! There. Perfect!

Besides feeling incredibly underwhelmed and disappointed? Come on, guys, get on her league.

It was kind of hard to argue with Chip's strategy, though.

But it was her turn, and she was proud af over this one, and soooo....

"What I've served you today is a bourbon-rehydrated Slim Jim mini-meatball wrapped with turkey bacon and a bit of arugula for a fresh element, with a some bourbon barbeque glaze, and, of course, the real star of the dish to compliment it perfectly are the blueberry balsamic gelatin pearls topping each bite."

Keeping her from going away with the rest of the chefs? Or just Chip?

But Summer was very easily snagged, and she met his praise with a broad grin. "They obviously have no idea what they've gotten themselves into," she said easily with a laugh. "If they don't start bringing it, they might as well just give me the prize now."

But that would actually be kind of sad because she wanted to know what was in those other two baskets.

Oh, sorry, did someone get Chopped? Summer sort of stopped paying attention for a little bit because there had been a return on her whole kiss-on-the-cheek stunt, and, yeah, okay, moving onto the next round was cool and all, but that was, like, super nice.

But okay, Summer, head back in the game and not on the cute guy who made this all happen. This one was going to be a bit trickier.

And then she had an idea that was potentially incredibly stupid, but also, like, hilarious, and, honestly, at this point, if the judges couldn't appreciate it, then that was their loss, and then maybe they could go back to exploring the next step in that whole kissing thing they'd got going there.

So getting the jello prepared, then back to rehydrating the mangos because she'd watched way too much of this show to know better than to do anything but rehydrate anything that was dried, a bunch of the mangos and sauerkraut and some of the jello into a blender with some soy and giiiiinger, and then some sugar and salt dissolved in a pan with the sauerkraut juice before adding some mangos and chestnuts, and then the real highlight...find a jar lid or something to give her a good circle in some jello...

"Besides actual effort?"

Whoops, that one actually slipped out, didn't it? OH WELL, at least she didn't have to worry about her idea being too dumb to beat these jackoffs.

Well, it was a hard sell against Chip's glutes, ngl.

But anyway...

"Flank steak with a teriyaki glaze made with the dried chili mango and sauerkraut, with the jello to give it a really nice thick viscocity, served with a mango chestnut and chopped pineapple jello chutney, and, the real coup de grace, as you can see, are the pineapple jello rings with fake grill marks to really give it that nice straight out of the mid-century kitchen flair."

All just for you, Steeeeve.

There was a huge breath of relief from Summer at that news, because, yeah, Summer had been putting out some good shit here, but she was definitely going to be a goner if, like, abs came into the picture or something.

Not that she could necessarily complain, but, it was the final round, she'd actually really like to win this thing if she'd managed to get this far.

So, deep breath, a moment to focus, and shuffle through the basket.

Actually, she had no idea what Chip was even capable of making at this point, since he'd literally been getting by on his good looks, so she still couldn't just wing it. And there were a lot of fucking flavors going on with this one, jesus.

You know what? She was going to her specialty with this one. This was going to call for some cake flavored vodka...

There wasn't a whole lot of difference to their approaches, for the most part, but, then again, there were only a few directions where the mind could possibly go with all of that, but, needless to say, even though they were technically out of the kitchen, Summer was definitely feeling the heat, and not because of that unbuttoned button, either, CHIP.

"Layered lemon and chocolate cake jello shots," she announced, with a proud little lift of her chin. "Basically two laters lemon zest and blended dragonfruit with the lemon jello and cake flavored vodka between a thinner layer of the marcapone and the coffee whipped up like a pudding. With a nice chocolate truffle dusting around the rim."

Dammit, Chip! She was supposed to be on a date here! Sure, she'd barely spoken to said date in well over an hour of this whole process, but come on!

But she was on a date, with a pretty amazing guy who put all this together, and she'd put out an amazing performance either way, so that (and okay, okay, maybe all those undone buttons) gave her the confidence to retort, "Clearly the one with both."

Don't even try to tell her she didn't look super cute in this chef's coat.
